Calm Your Nervous System and Move Through Overwhelm

By Peter Julian

August 29, 2022

There are several techniques that can keep you from feeling overwhelmed. One is to name your emotion. Identifying whether you are feeling sad, angry, etc. gives the emotion less power. Another tip is to take care of your body, e.g., getting a drink of water if you’re thirsty. Just making eye contact with another person is also beneficial. Simple exercises can help, whether related to breathing, bending your neck, or bending your body forward. Other behaviors to combat the feeling of being overwhelmed include spending time in nature, praying, and doing something kind for others.

Key Takeaways:

  • There are many things that you can do dialectical behavior wise in order to lower your anxiety levels.
  • There are things you can do such as deep breathing and naming your emotions to help you get back to normal.
  • Since everyone is different, make sure to keep an eye on which technique works best for you.

“Brain imaging research shows that naming emotions shifts our focus to a different brain area, giving the emotion less power.”
