How to develop confidence when you feel worthless, according to science

Low self esteem has several undesired effects. People with low self esteem can develop mood and eating disorders and generally have a lower quality of life. Studies have shown that how you dress can improve self esteem. Wearing nice clothes (such as a suit as opposed to sweatpants) or the color black can improve confidence. A similar effect can be had by smelling good with the help of cologne or perfume. Taking photos, even selfies, can also give you a boost. Loud, bass heavy music can even improve self confidence. Talking to yourself, particularly in the second person, can also be beneficial. Lastly, it is more important how one expects to be perceived than how he or she is actually perceived.

Key Takeaways:

  • Individuals who struggle with low self-esteem tend to be more hypersensitive, according to Timothy J. Owens and Morris Rosenberg.
  • When someone lacks a healthy amount of confidence, they typically end up feeling incompetent, unloved, or even unwanted.
  • One common symptom of low self-esteem is not trusting your opinion, and viewing the opinions of others as superior to yours.

“Feelings of low self-esteem have been directly linked to aggression, mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, eating disorders, and a general lower quality of life.”
