Researchers discover how the brain changes when mastering a new skill

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have teamed up in order to find out what exactly happens in the brain when someone improves on a specific skill. They found that the neural circuitry associated with going from novice to expert can actually form new brain patterns known as neural activity patterns. These neural activity patterns enable the individual to complete the task that they’ve recently mastered, moving them from novice to expert.

Key Takeaways:

  • If one has to master a new skill be it a sport, an art, or a craft, he needs to devote much time to it.
  • Many scientists know that the brain changes in order to learn new skills but the mystery behind it all is that they do not know how it changes.
  • Understanding the working of the brain in new skills can help people who have brain injury in their efforts to relearn new things.

“They discovered that new neural activity patterns emerge with long-term learning and established a causal link between these patterns and new behavioral abilities.”
