Studies now show that surgery can accelerate or worsen the effects of Alzheimer’s. Researchers looked at levels of altered amyloid-b levels and showed that memory problems and patient cognition worsened as a result of surgical procedures. The findings show that the elderly are in a fragile state for a variety of reasons, and having a surgical procedure would leave them prone to having memory issues at a far greater rate than that of their younger counterparts.

Key Takeaways:

  • A study with the University of Bonn Medical Center claims that major surgery is an accelerator of Alzheimer disease.
  • cognitive deterioration has been a well known side effect of surgeries for many years but this connection is only recently made.
  • Abnormal amyloid-? levels were counted as being much worse after surgery compared to normal patients.

“Pre-surgical evaluation always assesses whether cardiac or respiratory function will withstand the surgery, however, the potential consequences of the operation for the patient’s brain are not usually determined.”
