Vox cofounder Ezra Klein does not buy into the theory that automation will devastate the economy in the near-future by replacing low-wage workers. In fact, he goes to say that in many areas of the economy, the problem is not too many robots but too few. He doesn’t believe that lower-class workers will be eniterely replaced by automation because humans are excellent at assign new values unrelated to their actual use or value of the position.
Key Takeaways:
- There will not be an apocalypse due to technology, but living standards can actually be improved as a result of technology.
- Many of the issues in the economy are not due to too much technology, but a lack of technology.
- Automation should allow us to get richer faster and share the resources in our society.
“Klein doesn’t believe greater automation will leave us with a useless class of jobless people. Humans excel at assigning value to jobs, unrelated to their actual use or dignity, he says. Humans will imbue new jobs with both social capital and money as the future pushes forward.”
