By Margaret

April 1, 2019

Everyone experiences emotions and some of us are better than others at controlling them by allowing ourselves to feel them. Oftentimes as we enter into adolescence our hormones cause emotional fluctuations that we do not understand. If we are taught at a young age how to understand and control our emotions we are better with how we interact. It is important to recognize that emotions are fleeting, they are not against us, and that they require patience.

  • Adolescence can be times of extreme change for kids. The author states that in one incident, her teenager went from sadness to happiness to frustration in twelve minutes.
  • Adults don’t go through cycles of emotions as teenagers do but our feelings are sometimes big and do fluctuate too. In those times, we need to act tough.
  • The author suggests that the emotions we feel change often but if someone is feeling persistent sadness for long periods, he should consult a doctor.

“Often we attack in anger, or we drink or shop or eat our emotions rather than feeling uncomfortable. We choose behaviors in the heat of the moment that unleash a bunch of other bad feelings or things we have to go back and fix.”
