The Brain Benefits of Exercise

Everyone knows the muscular and cardiovascular benefits of exercise. It is also interesting to note benefits to the brain that exercise can provide. There is a study that showed well educated people live longer than people without schooling. One possible causal factor could be a slower deterioration of the brain postponing senility. A study of cyclists showed that the production of T cells among athletes did not decrease as it did for the rest of the population.

Key Takeaways:

  • It has been found that exercises do not have only cardiovascular benefits like controlling weight and reducing blood pressure, but they also have brain benefits.
  • Previously, due to studies on persons who had traumatic brain injuries, it was thought that the brain was fixed. Now, it is known that the brain is highly malleable.
  • The test on the malleability of the brain was conducted on London cab drivers who were made to drive the streets of London without a map or GPS.

“Recent evidence shows that physical activity does the same for the muscular system. Indeed cyclists who remained active into middle and old age (55-79 years) had no evidence of aging in their muscular system compared to healthy young adults (aged 20-36 years).”
