I’ve watched the paradigm of true health and well-being shift over the decades. Whereas conventional medicine of the 20th Century focused more on physical health only and sustaining life by using pharmaceuticals, advances in technology, and trying to impart the importance of lifestyle changes to promote longevity and quantity in years, I now see a bigger shift to look at health from an all-encompassing mind, body, spirit perspective.
The Case for the Mind-Body Connection
Books that tout the connection between our thoughts and emotions affecting our physiology abound:
- “Molecules of Emotion, Why You Feel the Way You Feel” by Candace Pert
- “Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life” by Wayne Dyer
- “Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul” by Deepak Chopra
This is just a sampling of 3 popular books that stress the mind, body, spirit connection. There is a connection between our thoughts and emotions that create physiological changes contributing to either vibrant health or to the decline in our physical health because of the distortion or blockage in energy flow.
Scientists in the field of quantum physics such as Max Planck stated that matter originates and exists by virtue of a force (energy) and that consciousness is the force or language program of the Universe. Therefore, our reality, health or otherwise, is created as a by-product of our superconscious or conscious thoughts and emotions/feelings.
There are philosophies that believe “as above, so below, as below, so above”. Basically explained, what happens in our superconscious minds denses down into our physical reality, and vice versa, what happens in our physical reality rises up to our superconscious thoughts and beliefs.
All is connected, much like steam ( superconscious thought) denses down to water (emotions/feelings) and denses down to ice (physical manifestation) and vice versa in that what we experience in our physical reality can rise up to our emotions or feelings, and then become a thought or belief in our superconsciousness. Just like an H2O molecule is 3 different states of the same substance in steam, water, and ice, so thoughts, emotions, and physical illness can be 3 different states of energy distortion or blockage.
In studying 2 energy medicine disciplines, Integrative Energy Therapy and Jin Shin Jyutsu, I learned about connections for non-physiological causes that contribute to health issues or “dis-ease”. Over the years in working with my clients, and addressing their health and well-being goals, I find more often than not, that certain thoughts and feelings can and often do affect their physical status.
In order for them to achieve their highest level of health, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects must be considered and balanced. A lot of my ongoing coaching and counselling sessions with clients consist of addressing the non-physiological aspects once their physical complaints have been alleviated or completely resolved.
In achieving my degrees as a Doctor of Naturology and PhD in Naturology, and over the 18 subsequent years I’ve been in practice, I studied many disciplines, some required and some as continuing education for professional use and interest. I was required to complete the Teacher’s course of “A Course in Miracles” where the main theme deals with moving from fear to love. I studied the Sedona Method, Certified in The Silva Method of Mind Control, and became a certified practitioner in Integrative Energy Therapy and Jin Shin Jyutsu Level II Self-Healing Arts.
In combining information and theories across many disciplines, I help my clients explore the possibilities of non-physiological components that contribute to the areas of their life where they feel stuck or where physical dis-ease lingers.
5 Negative Emotions and How They Can Contribute to Physical Disease
If we accept love as the primary healer for mind, body, and spirit, then we must look at which negative emotions contribute to causing physical disease. Five of the main emotional causes are worry, fear, anger, sadness, and pretense. Each of these emotions will MORE OFTEN THAN NOT affect specific organ systems and energy pathways in our physical bodies.
WORRY– If you tend to worry you may experience health issues that affect your energy meridians for stomach and spleen. It can manifest as frequent digestive issues, upset stomach or “nervous stomach” or frequent immune system problems. In addition, worry can also affect skin causing rashes, eczema, dermatitis, hives, and psoriasis to name a few.
FEAR– If you experience feelings of fear often, you may have health issues that affect your energy meridians of kidney and bladder. But this can also affect reproductive issues, adrenal issues (fatigue or excess energy), endocrine system imbalances, and frequent aches, pains and spasms in muscles, back pain and even chronic sinus issues.
ANGER– If you have feelings of anger, whether at someone else or yourself, you may affect energy meridians for health issues connected to liver or gallbladder. Interestingly these meridians, if distorted, will contribute to migraines, tremors, sciatica, lymphatic system imbalance, cellulite, vision for near and farsightedness, and even hiatal hernia. They can also impede toxin elimination and metabolism. Also some blood diseases are affected by distortions in liver and gallbladder energy meridians. The phrase “bad blood” is often used in situations where anger prevails.
SADNESS– If you have feelings of sadness, you may have issues with energy meridians that affect lung function or large intestine. Wounded spirits, low self-esteem, inability to self-express, or loss or emotional hurt can manifest in compromised lung functions, addictions to smoking, COPD, and other lung diseases. Likewise, with large intestine energy meridian distortion, issues of constipation, diarrhea, and even some allergies or food sensitivities can come from ongoing sadness as contributors to these health issues. Sadness also may affect deep tissue and connective tissue problems and fibromyalgia pain.
PRETENSE– If you go through life pretending things are all okay, trying to hide how you really feel, trying to make everyone happy, then you may have issues with energy meridians that affect heart and small intestines. This emotion can manifest as cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks, strokes, as well as malabsorption issues, some digestive issues, imbalance of bacteria or dysbiosis in gut health, and all the way to problems of bone health such as joint diseases, bone spurs, and osteoporosis.
These emotions, and the ORGAN SYSTEM energy meridian they affect are not what we might imagine, for the concepts we have in western medicine of individual organs are very different than how things are viewed via an ORGAN SYSTEM and its energy pathway as believed in these alternate health disciplines. However, if you find that you have health issues that you can connect to any of these listed emotions and subsequent physical manifestation, then I suggest you try to work on the emotional components in the process of addressing your health and not just on a physical basis only.
Over the years, my clients have found addressing the emotional connections to some of their physical problems to be as important, and in some cases, even more so, than just working on what is necessary for physical well-being.
Next month, I will continue the mind, body, spirit connections regarding circadian rhythm and 24 hour energy flow. In the interim, if you are feeling stuck in achieving good results despite doing all the right and good things you know to do or are directed to do by your healthcare team, consider there may be a non-physiological connection, and do your best to start working on your thoughts and emotions if you believe they contribute to your health obstacles.
Wishing you health, peace in mind-body-spirit, and living your best life.
