Can You Change Your Personality?

By Peter Julian

November 3, 2019

Certain parts of our personalities can be changed but the catch is that you have to constantly work towards making those changes. You first, have to acknowledge the trait you would like to change and then take on challenges that take you out of your comfort zone. For some people it helped and for other, more stubborn people, it wasn’t as effective. It’s important that when you really want to change something about yourself it is important to expect to work at it forever. You will see changes, but those changes wont stick around if you don’t continue the changed behavior.

Key Takeaways:

  • One recent study tried to give people “workouts” to change their scores on the “Big Five” personality traits: agreeableness, neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness and openness.
  • The subjects were given small, manageable tasks designed to work on changing specific personality traits, such as asking neurotic patients to intentionally imagine positive scenarios.
  • People who couldn’t complete challenges, however, often moved in the opposite direction, suggesting that follow-through is of great importance.

“Still — so far, so intuitive. The more steadily people worked towards their goals, the more they succeeded.”
