Donna asks…

Do you agree with the “God made the science available” argument?

Invariably, when Christians and Atheists argue with eachother on Yahoo, someone will cite the accomplishments of science and then some will retort that “God made that available to you through people”.

It seems to me, that this argument falls under the category of “circular reasoning”… And so sometimes, a clever atheist will draw the point that “if science was made by God, then we must credit him with the Atom bomb and Methamphetamines”.

Now the argument becomes:
If God made man… and man made science… then it is NOT necessarily true that “God revealed Science to man”…

This allows the subliminal deduction that Science is CONTRARY to God… which really means that at the heart of this argument, Christians may fear that Science will eventually disprove or contradict God and that Atheists may secretly hope for the same result but are not sure that they will succeed…

The first person to realize that their motive has been discovered will give up on the argument…

BrainSpeak answers:

I think God made us too smart I wouldn’t say every thought was given to us but the ability to reason, think, invent was given to us. Now have we taken our power of knowledge too far? Have our motivations been corrupted? That is a whole other can of worms

Linda asks…

Do you feel better now that science proves you are insignificant?

Last night, to my deepest regrets (masochist that I am), I watched yet another ‘science’ program featuring world renowned sociopathic misanthrope, Dr. Michio Kaku, in which he spends fifty-nine minutes explaining that the world is 4.6 billion years old (which is totally informative because it’s definitely not as if I didn’t already know that for the last forty years) then Kaku spends one minute explaining the relativity of ‘earth time’ to human life essentially summing it up with the single word, “insignificant”… Yes! Hooray once again for the liberating enlightenment of science and rationality! I am insignificant and science proves it. Isn’t that great?

What exactly does this attitude do for me today as I return to my insignificant desk to repeat the insignificant actions I conducted last week? Why bother? … After all, I am insignificant, so my job must also be insignificant, and my bills too. In fact, since it’s all so insignificant and unfulfilling, why waste any more insignificant time on it? Why bother living out the rest of this insignificant day? Don’t even answer these insignificant questions, your answers are insignificant, YOU are insignificant. Life is insignificant.

It’s real fashionable to criticism the superstition of religion and complain about overzealous evangelism but I swear, no religious evangelism, no matter how aggressive or overzealous, has ever made me feel so demoralized or so defensive as the bleak and dismal rational televangelism of Michio Kakook and his Church of Neo-Science-Nihilism. “Insignificant” is not a scientific fact, it is a belief no more rational and no less superstitious than god, judgment or afterlife. In the contest between religion and neo-science-nihilism, I identify religion as the defenseless imperiled underdog and science as the sadistic bully aggressor. I have come to sympathize with religion while my contempt for undisciplined fanatical science corrodes my attitude toward all science in general. I can’t even focus on something as benign as geology anymore without suspiciously scrutinizing every word of the geologist, sure that if I pay close enough attention, I will hear the subliminal evangelism of neo-science-nihilism. I think legitimate scientists and even layperson enthusiasts should resent fringe kooks like Michio Kakook even more than I do because his overzealous fanaticism damages legitimate science by mere association.

Am I a raving nutbasket… or have you also noticed the fanatical overzealous evangelism of the Holy Rational Church of Neo-Science-Nihilism?
QUICK REACTIONS:

In fact, the idea that the earth is 4.6 billion years old in a universe that is 14.(whatever) years old makes me feel incredibly SIGNIFICANT and furthermore were those numbers double, I would feel TWICE AS SIGNIFICANT…

… and… argument: If Kaku also thinks life is significant… why does he never SAY SO! Based on his words, I would never guess.
DLM… great smart a55 answer! Thanks for the levity.

How much is modern day life becoming like Huxley’s classic Brave new world?

Huxley was a visionary of his time and foretold much advances that have passed in science I.V.F, subliminal messaging and such. Will mankind wander further down this road in there search for a quick fix of cheap entertainment all the while distracted… letting oppressive company’s lead mankind’s interests in every facet of life.

Should quidditch be an NCAA sport? opinions?

So i was on the IQA website the other day (International Quidditch Association) and this question came across my mind. Like, there are 272 quidditch teams in the US and a good 95% of that are various colleges including Penn State, Virginia Tech, Yale, and a crap load of others. Its increadably popular and they already have a date/location set for the world cup! HP fans out there understand what im saying.
Unfortunetly not every college has a team but there are a crap load of teams out there. What do you guys think? I think it would be interesting to see that be part of the NCAA, or would that take the fun/magic out of the game?

BrainSpeak answers:

Hell no, theres a quidditch club at my university and its just a bunch of jews running around on brooms playing handball. Completely stupid

Why would Palestinians say these things ?

Zahir Muhsein, the leader of the al-Sa’iqa Organization “The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese.”

Arafat “The question of borders doesn’t interest us… From the Arab standpoint, we mustn’t talk about borders. Palestine is nothing but a drop in an enormous ocean. Our nation is the Arabic nation that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea and beyond it….. The P.L.O. is fighting Israel in the name of Pan-Arabism. What you call “Jordan” is nothing more than Palestine.”

Arab leader, Abd al-Mahdi “There is no such land. Palestine is a term invented by the Zionists. There is no Palestine in the Bible. Our land was for hundreds of years a part of Syria.”

The founder of the P.L.O. himself, Ahmed Shukari, “such a creature as Palestine does not exist at all. This land is nothing but the southern portion of Greater Syria…”

Has anyone been to a Buddhist meditation retreat?

I am wondering what is it like, and what you learn there.

You’ll learn meditation with the guidance of the monks in the serenity of the mountain backdrops. I think there’s one in San Jose.

Betty asks…

Is 2 weeks Meditation Retreat enough, to return to city life “as fresh as a child”?

I wanna go and de-program my conditioning (a.k.a. disconnect from the Matrix), and return fresh so that I can condition myself again but in the way i want.
PS: you go to this small hut in the himalayas, which takes 2 days by walking cause there are no car routes.

What is the difference between self-esteem and arrogance?

When you meet someone who feels that they are attractive, are they demonstrating positive self-esteem or arrogance?

When you meet someone who feels that they are intelligent, are they demonstrating positive self-esteem or arrogance?

When you meet someone who feels that they are a good person, are they demonstrating positive self-esteem or arrogance?

Where do *you* draw the line between positive self-esteem and arrogance?

BrainSpeak answers:

Arrogance is having a lot of self esteem and lying to oneself that he is what he is not. Self esteem is the measurement of how you think of yourself. Youre arrogant when youre going against the actual truth in the back of your brain

Sandra asks…

What is the link between self esteem and intelligence?

I ask because I know some highly intelligent people in my class, comparatively speaking they make the rest of us look borderline retarded. However, they are also very insecure, they don’t really seem to consider themselves bright, even though everyone else can see they are brilliant. I guess my question is do people with lower self esteem tend to be brighter? Or maybe duller? Do people with high self esteem tend to be brighter or duller? Or is there really no connection between intelligence and self esteem?

BrainSpeak answers:

There’s no connection even though it seems like there should be. It seems to make sense that if you’re really bright you ought to have great self-esteem. People in general have greatness in them that they don’t see, no matter what it is. Everyone is an expert at something. This proves that a person’s intelligence level has nothing to do with how they see themselves.

Chris asks…

How can I incorporate self-esteem into a biology lesson?

I need to formulate a lesson plan for a high school biology course that incorporates self-esteem in some way. I wanted to possibly include some of the physiology involved with low/high self-esteem, but all of the resources I’ve come across focus on other aspects of self-esteem. Does anyone have any ideas for the lesson or resources I could refer to? Thanks!

BrainSpeak answers:

Self-esteem is a bit of a squishy science. I think it’s a combination of mood (manic/depressive, stress and everything in between), combined with psychological factors

The psychology is not within the scope of biology, but the many aspects of mood are certainly affected by the health of the human animal

So I can think of two approaches which would compliment one another. . .

1. Study the neurological aspects of self-awareness. I’m not sure where you’d begin with that. Perhaps look at MRI scans of people with different moods and the brain chemistry involved. There is a lot to work with there, but I don’t know how you’d adopt it for a course. Perhaps get into the basics of how the brain functions, and which critical receptors are at play in determining different moods. Look at the role of serotonin and similar. Perhaps study how the various drugs change things in the brain; kids these days could benefit from knowing as much as they can about how both street drugs and prescription pharmaceuticals work. (I’d explore the dark and dirty side of both. The legal drug industry is a monster.)

2. Look at how nutrition and environmental factors (toxins in water, food, etc.), and general health can affect awareness, energy levels and neurology. I believe even light is a factor. There is a lot related to mood in even something as basic as eating a hamburger. (I know people who turn sad and angry every time they eat fast food or high sugar items. There are sound reasons for this. Hormones in milk and eggs and chicken can also really screw up a person. Soy is an interesting plant; it contains a female growth hormones which, while plant derived, can have a significant impact upon people who consume it; I’ve read accounts where male babies fed on Soy milk have been damaged.) Look at organic food alternatives to see how they affect the body.

Detoxification is a neat concept. Look at how it can be achieved through sweating, and how toxins and heavy metals are stored in fat cells. Maybe look at how fluoride affects the pineal gland, (which is the producer of melatonin in the brain, which affects sleep and dream states). I read a story which described how Nazi prison camps experimented with introducing different substances into the drinking water to make prisoners docile and easy to bully. Fluoride topped the list as the most effective. (I don’t know how much self-esteem one can have when drugged into docility.)

Self-esteem is linked to sound mental health, which in turn is linked to sound physical health.

It’s a very clever course you are investigating. There is tons of this stuff and it is absolutely fascinating. You can really help your kids by teaching this kind of course.

Kudos, and good luck!

His record sucks and his ideas are worse. Sublimal ads usually work better than appeals to rationality. Emotion trumps reason when voting for President.

Donna asks…

Is it safe to input multiple subliminal messages into your mind?

I’ve always wondered when it comes to subliminal messages, is it safe for someone to hear a multitude of them in say, a recording?

BrainSpeak answers:

It would not be possible. Even consciously you cannot think of two things at the same time. This about a yellow duckie, then a Brahma bull. You can’t hold both images in your mind at the same time. You can switch back and forth.

The truth is that if you play a subliminal message cd or mp3 album without having an open, positive attitude, and without really consciously wanting the change to occur then no, it WILL NOT WORK. For example if you give a stop smoking subliminal cd to a friend who does not WANT to stop smoking there is very little chance of them stopping.

Just like hypnosis subliminal messages will not make you do anything you do not want to do. They simply align your subconscious mind with your conscious goals. However if you want to quit smoking, or maybe you have tried before and failed then subliminal messages can help you.

Are profiteering scientists using TV violence as subliminal mind control to prove theories of behavior?

In researching sociopaths, as an attempt to understand those who have no conscience and no empathy I ran across a number of exceptionally cruel experiments in the name of science that were in my understanding simply an attempt to prove that their htred is justified by our sheepishness and our ignorance and our lac of any worthy creative works.

BrainSpeak answers:

Your question makes me feel like I just walked into the middle of a conversation and need to be brought up to speed on the details. Without any knowledge of which researchers, theories or experiments we are discussing, I feel safe saying that yes, there are bound to be at least a few sociopaths among the millions of scientists in the world. I have heard of more than one cruel and degrading experiment that it seems only a sociopath or psychopath could conceive. Scientists, too, are vulnerable to mental illness.

Lisa asks…

What science whould deal with the theory that sounds, noises, and music can be addictive?

I have read somewhere that the sounds associated with slot machines create addictive behavior. I recently latched on to a rather meaningless sound clip, ALL YOUR BASE http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/11940 ,which led me to a night-long fascination in researching everything associated with it. I realized it had stuck in my head, and felt it was making my heart beat faster when I heard the music. It’s primal, like the reaction some people have with trance music. Looking at different societies, and back in history, I think there’s other music, or sounds that are addictive or reactionary, sometimes even as part of a people’s culture. My question is, what is the study of this? I know experiments have been done with subliminal advertising, and I reason that slot machine makers, and video game mfg. consciously manipulate music or sounds to be addictive. I haven’t had much luck researching this. Any help would be appreciated, and have a great day! ;-)
a link to the wikipedia article of what was behind that flash video that had me mesmorized.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_your_base

BrainSpeak answers:

Psychology comes to mind. Aesthetics can also be another possibility. Mathematics as well believe it or not; there is something “logical” about certain sounds or combinations of sounds that stimulate the brain.

I can understand your fascination with it. It truly is remarkable. Sorry I couldn’t give you a more in depth answer, your question is complex.

How would you define Subliminal?

I have looked on websites such as Wikipedia & Dictionary.com but the person i need to break down this definition for still doesn’t quite get the jist and i’m not sure how to further define it, Any ideas? Or any Similar words that have the same definition?

Thanks for your help
Mitzski! x

BrainSpeak answers:

Under the comprehensive level. Absorbed only by the sub-conscious. Too fast/subtle to be recognized by the conscious mind.

Charles asks…

Does anyone believe in subliminal messages from media?…cause I don’t!?

They say in this article:
Subliminal messages have always been a uncanny phenomenon and often subject to scientific and public debate. A subliminal message is a signal in the form of a picture or sound that is designed to pass the normal limits of perception. That means that people perceive it with their subconscious while not perceiving it consciously. This technique is sometimes used in movies and advertising to influence the subconscious of the viewer.

Also from http://skepdic.com/subliminal.html :
“The subliminal is below the liminal (the smallest detectable sensation).

Anything truly below the level of detectable sensation could not, by definition, be perceived. However, the subliminal is generally said to be below the threshold of conscious perception. There is a widespread belief, not strongly supported by empirical research, that without being aware of its presence or content, a person’s behavior can be significantly affected by subliminal messages. Thus, it is believed that one can influence behavior by surreptitiously appealing to the subconscious mind with words and images. If this were true, then advertisers could manipulate consumer behavior by hiding subliminal messages in their ads. The government, or Aunt Hilda for that matter, could control our minds and bodies by secretly communicating to us subliminally. Learners could learn while listening to music embedded with subliminal messages. Unfortunately, “…years of research has resulted in the demonstration of some very limited effects of subliminal stimulation” and no support for its efficaciousness in behavior modification (Hines, 312).

It’s difficult to prove whether images are meant to be subliminal and whether they trigger the sought-after effect. Simultaneously, they also give good way for nice conspiracy theories and spooky stories. However, the deliberate use of suggestive images meant to evoke a secondary hidden effect could be at least considered dubious and unethical.
It is true that we can perceive things even though we are not conscious of perceiving them. However, for those who put messages in tapes and then record music over the messages so that the messages are drowned out by the music or other sounds, it might be useful to remember that if the messages are drowned out by other sounds, the only perceptions one can have are of the sounds drowning out the messages. There is no evidence of anyone hearing a message which is buried beneath layers of other sounds to the point where the message does not distinctly stand out. Of course, if the message distinctly stood out, it would not be subliminal.

Please make your statemements if you believe this is true.

BrainSpeak answers:

Subliminal messages do work however the messages that are reverse played is doubtful as your brain cannot understand unless your brain subconsciously uses its effort to perceive meanings, which is unlikely, However barely audible subliminal messages( not necessary heard by conscious effort) do work like the way autosuggestion works. As human brain or ear tend not ho hear complete sentence so does the human eyes, human eyes does not have to read the whole letters in the word to read out the complete sentence.

For e.g. Read below:

I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod alatucly
uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The
phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde

Yes it is not the music or subliminal messages that you see or hear it is the human brain that has a tendency to understand variations. Human Brain can perceive things even though you dont hear or see things in the way you suppose to see or hear with conscious effort.. Trust me good quality subliminal works like a charm if used correctly.. I have been using the one from http://www.braineditor.com I will urge you to try them nothing to loose really. Honestly these days so many research out their which are biased and are limited to the old belief, thay rather put a resistance to the new belief.. So I advise you to use your instinct and judgement instead

Lizzie asks…

Subliminal message?

subliminal messages in pictures.
can some one tell what that means.
im in grade 8 and my speech is on subliminal messages.
i cant think of what the pictures within pictures means?
definition and explaination please!

BrainSpeak answers:

Subliminal is a message that you don’t know you have seen but your subconcious mind knows. It was used in theaters at one point where you’d be watching the movie and when they’d have those movie reals, they’d insert one single frame of popcorn or soda or something to tap into your mind and make you thirsty or hungry. It’d flash so fast that you wouldn’t know you saw it nor would anyone around you know it, but your subconcious minds know you saw it and then suddenly you’d be hungry or thirsty. Or at least that was the goal. They’ve also been used in commercials before too but they’re illegal and no longer allowed. A lot of movies have subliminal messages too in a sense like Little Mermaid where the underlying message is the daughter defying her father; same with Aladdin. Basically it’s a message within a message or picture within a picture where you think you’re seeing one thing, but really there is something “hidden” within the message or picture. You get it? Hope this helps!

Laura asks…

Meditation/Buddhism: Any substitute for Zafu and Zabuton?

I have been sitting on a rolled up pillow and wonder if someone might recommend an affordable alternative to the traditional meditation cushions. The cheapest I have found were $80, which might not seem like a lot to some, but it is to me. Any recommendations?

BrainSpeak answers:

Zafus and zabutons can be quite expensive. I have a friend who has made some and she says that they’re very labor-intensive, which probably accounts for the cost.

For the zabuton, you can easily substitute a folded blanket. The ideal blanket would be fairly thin, without a lot of stuffing in it. Fold it into an appropriate size – about 36″ x 36.” If you like a thicker mat, you can fold together two blankets. A folded yoga mat can also substitute.

For the zafu, the primary consideration is to find something that can support your body in a stable sitting position. For most people, this means that the cushion can’t be too soft. It’s also important that the item not be lumpy, so that you can remain (reasonably) comfortable while sitting. When traveling, I’ve used bed or couch pillows. But the most successful thing I’ve found is a folded bath towel. If the towel is fairly large, it can fold into a stable base that isn’t too soft.

Finally, you might check periodically for a used set on your local Craigslist.

Best wishes for your sitting!

Daniel asks…

What is a good meditation cushion to get for zen meditation?

I am 5’8 and weigh 180 pounds. I am looking to purchase a meditation cushion that will support my weight and elevate my lower-end above the floor. Right now I am sitting on a couple cotton pillows that are too weak and it feels like I’m sitting on the floor which isn’t good for my spine. I don’t want anymore homemade substitutes. What is a good brand and type to get?

BrainSpeak answers:

Zen meditation is not on sit; 4 altitudes are in Zen. Sit is the better way of Zen. Beginner; 2 pillow of 2″ pillow is the much. Later on 1 2″ pillow is good enough. The knees and the bottom cushion are totally 3 support points touch the ground easily to be stable. Execite before your sit. Count breaths, hearing blood cycle, feeling , are the way of concentration.
Sit down quietly and watching the mind come up and gone, don’t follow until there are no more mind come up again. It is just the beginning. Your feeling no more mind, is also a mind don’t forget.

William asks…

I wonder if using a cushion is so important for somebody practicing Zen Meditation?

I am currently using a yoga mat and I sit on a block to practice my Zen meditation. I read that it will be more beneficial to buy a Cushion(Zabuton)
I wonder if that will make a big difference for me?

BrainSpeak answers:

The only important thing about how you sit during Zen meditation is that you be comfortable enough to sit without fidgeting or damaging pain for the duration of your sitting period.

You can freely use whatever physical props you like. Some people sit in chairs, others on cushions, blankets, boards, or nothing at all (right on the floor).

So if a yoga mat and wooden block work for you, then no problem!

Nancy asks…

How do you build back your academic self esteem after you get an F on a test?

BrainSpeak answers:

You could look back at other successful tests and experiences in which you did well. Failure is only an opportunity to do something differently. You may improve study techniques and habits or maybe it might be time to change majors if the problem is severe. Either way the best way to build self is by doing positive things.
